Weather concerns forced local swimmers into double duty this past Sunday in their first meet of the season at the Scott Valley SharkFest Invitational in Etna, but after just two weeks of practice, 11 members of the Weed Swim Club emerged to positive results.
“For the kids that have been with us, it was their best meet ever,” said Weed swim coach Tami Frisbie. “And it was a good experience for our brand new swimmers.”
Veteran swimmer Shelbie Slabaugh returned from a year’s hiatus with a victory in the 100 meter butterfly. She also was runner-up in the 50 and 100 freestyle events.
Other top performances turned in by the Weed Swim Team were by Janelle Jaegel –  fourth in the 200 breaststroke and fifth in the 100 breaststroke – and Nick Horner, who finished fourth in the 50 meter butterfly.
The 13-18 year old relay team of Chelsea Quigley, Melaina Vogel, Jaegel and Slabaugh took fourth in both the 200 Medley Relay and the 200 Freestyle Relay.
Four of Weed’s 11 swimmers competed in their first events.
“For the younger ones, we focus on doing everything right technically,” said Weed swim coach Nancy Miller. “They did okay. Some are more into swimming than competing. We’re hoping for a big turnout this weekend.”
This weekend Weed will host the Mt. Shasta Invitational, as Etna, Yreka, and possible squads from Southern Oregon and Redding arrive for competition beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday at Weed’s Bel Air Park pool.
Seventy-five youth swimmers between the ages of four to 18 have registered with the Weed Swim Team, according to Miller, who is accepting new swimmers only through this Thursday.
At this past weekend’s SharkFest, 244 swimmers travelled from Red Bluff, Anderson, Grants Pass, Weaverville,Weed, and Yreka to compete.
But due to thunder and lightning on Saturday, the meet was postponed to Sunday and the athletes swam 80 events in one day.
“In all my years of coaching I’ve never seen that,” Frisbie said. “We were all exhausted by the end of the day. But I think the meet ran flawless.”
