The Weed High School softball team broke a long drought with a doubleheader sweep over University Prep in 90-plus degree heat Redding last week.
The Cougars won the opener 18-3, as Lori Garcia was 2 for 5 with 3 runs and a double; Madison Moser singled; Taylor Van Dyke scored a run and drove one in; Breanna Fisher was 2 for 4, scored 3 and drove in one; Kaytlin Harchie drove in 4 and scored 3; Sierra Skeen doubled and scored 2; Mindi Chandler was 2 for 4 with a triple, 3 runs and 1 RBI.
Chandler was the winning pitcher, going five innings and striking out 8.
Weed won game two, 14-9, as Garcia singled and scored 2 runs; Moser was 2 for 5 with an RBI; Fisher was 3 for 5 with 2 RBI; Harchie scored 2; Elizabeth Tavalero had 4 hits, Skeen scored 3 runs; Chandler scored 2 and drove in 2; and Lyddia Gray singled, scored a run and drove in 1.
