The competition was intense and crashes were frequent during the USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Finals the weekend of July 18-19 at SolVista Bike Park in Granby, Col.
Mount Shasta’s Scott Punt placed 9th out of 35 riders from throughout the country in the Cat II Jr. Men 15-18 downhill division with a time of 2:47.
His father Gary Punt, who finished his Nationals run unable to pedal because of a chain malfunction at the top of the course, placed 6th in Cat II Men 40-49 with a time of 3:14.
“We had a great time,” Gary said in an e-mail.
The Punts, who both qualified for Nationals at races earlier in the season, competed on the same course at SolVista, which Gary described as “rocky with a lot of big jumps, bermed corners and log drops.”
Gary said the competition featured “a very impressive group of riders,” but that didn’t prevent “a lot of injuries during practice sessions and crashes during the race runs.”
Such is the nature of the sport.
This weekend Scott and Gary will compete at Willamette Pass in Oregon.
