Siskiyou County’s 2009 Relay for Life began at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 25, at College of the Siskiyous in Weed.

For the next 24 hours the American Cancer Society fundraiser will continue with plenty of entertainment, contests, food, games and other festivities. The entire community is invited to participate.

Dinner, which is sponsored by the Garden Party, will be served at 5:30 p.m. Following dinner, preparations for the Luminaria Ceremony will begin. After dark, thousands of decorated white paper bags lit from within will line the entire perimeter of the track, each representing memories of loved ones lost and those who are currently battling cancer.

Activities will continue throughout the night, with movies on a giant outdoor screen, karaoke contests, dancing, music and more.

Breakfast on Sunday morning will be provided by Burger King, and closing ceremonies are scheduled for 10 a.m.

All proceeds from the Relay for Life go toward cancer research and to resources for local residents who have been touched by cancer.
