On September 21, 2009 longtime Dunsmuir resident, Thomas Jesiah “Joe” Edson, died peacefully at home with his daughters and caregiver and friend of three years, Gary Adair, by his side. He was 91 years old.
Joe was born in Gazelle, California on January 22, 1918. He attended both Weed and Yreka high schools, graduating from Yreka in 1935.
He married the love of his life, Shirley Hoogbruin, on November 12, 1941. They made their home in Dunsmuir. Upon her death in August 2004 they had been married for 62 years.
Joe hired out with the Southern Pacific Railroad as a fireman in 1941 and retired as a locomotive engineer in 1980.
He is survived by his daughters, Nikki (and John) Charles, and Trudee Edson; three grandchildren, Sean (and Misty) Charles, Jennifer (and Paul) Crawford, and Jodi Stanley; three great-grandchildren, Heather Charles, and Lucas and Lindsey Crawford.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley; their son, Lee Edson; their daughter, Candace Stanley; his parents, Clinton and Mary Edson; and three brothers and two sisters.
At Joe’s request there will be no services. Burial arrangements are by Mt. Shasta Memorial Park.
