Allison Scull and Victor Martin have a new CD out entitled Cool Like the Breeze and for melodic jazz/samba style fans, the subtlety, professional depth, poetic lyrics and superb musicianship will be a delight.
Cool Like the Breeze proves that Scull and Martin refuse to stand still in their art, as the CD represents a leap in voice for Scull and a maturity in Martin’s saxophone. The production values are first rate with the backup musicians on piano and percussion adding significantly to the overall mood without overpowering Scull and Martin.
Scull’s voice range and mastery of styles is clearly evident as she weaves a musical spell through a huge variety of moods, never missing a note. Scull wrote six of the nine songs, and they show an accomplished lyric and musical dexterity.
Martin’s saxophone playing is the perfect instrument for this CD, coming in at just the right times with just the right moods. Martin only gets better with the years.
The duo is performing at Mike & Tony’s in Mount Shasta Dec. 31 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and at the Dunsmuir Brewery Works in Dunsmuir on Jan. 2 beginning at 7 p.m.
