George R. Lewis, went to be with his Lord at his home in Lake Shastina, May 17, 2010 after a long courageous battle with Parkinson Disease. He was 90 years old.
George was born September 9, 1919 in Stapleton, Nebraska.
After being raised on a ranch in Nebraska, he traveled to Washington and joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. He attended Washington State where his education was interrupted by World War II.
George served in the Army, active and reserves, retiring as a Captain after 20 years. In 1946 he met and married his beloved wife, Alice Barnhill. They were married 63 wonderful years.
In 1956 George finished  his education at San Jose State and began his 22 year career teaching junior high science at Monroe Elementary in Campbell, California.
He was a longtime member of Westhope Presbyterian Church in Saratoga and very active in their National Mariners Couples Organization. He served on the board of Camp Corralitos, a church camp in the mountains near Watsonville.
After retiring he spent seven years living in Cornville, Arizona before moving to Lake Shastina in 1986. He was active in Lake Shastina Community Bible Church, Kiwanas, and founded the Siskiyou County Parkinson Support Group.
George enjoyed gardening, especially growing blackberries. He loved traveling with the family seeing new places and camping.
He had a zest for life and was always interested in learning and doing new projects. No matter the circumstances, George was known for his humor and always had a joke and a smile ready.
George leaves behind his loving wife, Alice Lewis; sons, Paul Lewis of Sunnyvale and Alan Lewis of Yreka; daughter, Adriana (and Stephen) Penaluna of El Dorado, Kansas; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was proceeded in death by brother, Mahlon Lewis; and sisters, Margaret Schneider and Linda Muller.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 22 at Lake Shastina Community Bible Church.
