Fern M. Young passed away peacefully on June 10, 2010, at the Madrone Hospice in Yreka, California.

Fern was born on March 3, 1917 in Dickinson, ND. She grew up on North Dakota farms where she developed a life-long love of gardening and animals.

She followed a young man to northern California around the time of World War II and has been a resident of this area ever since. She was a bookkeeper for numerous local businesses, and was a well known member of the Dunsmuir community.

Fern was preceded in death by her husband Charles I. (“Ivan”) Young, former mayor of Dunsmuir, her parents William John Booke and Suzanne Mary Marcott Booke, and her siblings Shirleen Thompson and Maurice Booke.

Fern is survived by her sisters Evelyn Engel of Billings MT (married to Albert, deceased), Dolores Powers of Bloomington MN (married to Harold), Lucille Taylor of Moorehead MN (married to Robert), and her special cousin Joan Brown (married to Phil, deceased), and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the “Dunsmuir Fire Department, Fireman’s Association” or a charity of your choice.

Fern was very appreciative of the Dunsmuir volunteer firemen who were always there when Fern had an emergency.

A memorial mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on August 6, 2010, at St. John’s church in Dunsmuir, followed by a lunch in the St. John’s Parish Hall.
