Popular support for libraries is behind a widespread citizen effort to keep many of Siskiyou County’s  12 library branches open.

Friends of the Library groups and local governments across the county are currently funding basic staffing at eight branches, including those in McCloud, Weed, Dunsmuir, Montague, Fort Jones, Tulelake and Happy Camp.

Similar local funding efforts have restored some cut library hours in Mount Shasta, Etna and Butte Valley, said Siskiyou County library director Lisa Musgrove.

“I'm so glad [the libraries] are open,” said Thera Affleck of Mount Shasta. “I just knew they wouldn't be allowed to close.”

To extend the hours of the libraries with very little contribution from county coffers, a training session for prospective volunteers will take place at the Yreka branch on Tuesday, Aug. 3.

Those who are interested in becoming a level two volunteer will need to take the five hour training to learn basic computer, internet and service-oriented skills, Musgrove said.

There are several expectations for prospective volunteers, including familiarity with the library branch at which they wish to volunteer; a working knowledge of Windows XP and Internet Explorer; some experience with Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel; the ability to learn library policies and procedures and to enforce them consistently to all library patrons; a willingness to understand and abide the State of California Library laws concerning privacy; an ability to learn the Integrated Library System; familiarity with the Siskiyou County library website; familiarity with the library catalog; a willingness and ability to interact positively, encouragingly and with a standard of decorum with all members of the public who enter the library doors; and a willingness to accept that, even as a volunteer, they will be a representative of the branch library, the Siskiyou County Library System and the County of Siskiyou.
