Max O. Layton, 93 year old longtime Weed resident, passed away at Mercy Medical Center in Mount Shasta on Thursday, January 6, 2011 following a short illness.

Max was born on January 27, 1917 in the Pit River area to Arthur and Lena Layton. He moved to Siskiyou County in 1937 from the Modoc area.

On June 30, 1941 Max married Edith L. Dean in Reno, Nevada.

Max served in the US Army during World War II, participating in the Landing at Normandy. The family made their home in Siskiyou County following the war.

Max worked for Southern Pacific Railroad for 40 years. He and Edith owned Layton’s Liquors in Weed for some 20 years
Max was a charter member of the BPO Elks Lodge in Mount Shasta. He also enjoyed hunting.

Max is survived by his two sons, Matt of Weed and Tim and his wife Carolee, of Yreka; a niece, Katheryn Layton of Alturas; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by Edith in 2007; and a sister, Avis Kohls.

The family will be holding a memorial service later in the spring.
