Weed High School’s basketball teams, as they’ve been doing most of this season, won three of four games Thursday against visiting University Prep of Redding.

Weed’s varsity boys, JV boys and JV girls teams improved their combined record this season to 39-9.

On the other side of the coin, the Cougar varsity girls, after a 53-25 loss to U-Prep, remained winless in 2010-11.

Weed’s varsity boys needed some time to get their own offense going, but they suffocated U-Prep shooters throughout the game and won 58-21.

Senior Jake West, fresh off being named player of the week by Redding television station KRCR, led the Cougars with 17 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists.

Mykeil White scored 10 points in the post with 7 rebounds and 3 assists, and Micah White scored 10 points and had 6 steals.

Many reserves saw extended playing time in the second half after the Cougars  added to their 23-10 half time advantage.

The JV boys game was similarly one-sided, a 66-33 Weed win.

Freshman Spencer Hall scored a team-high 13 points and had 4 steals, and freshman Aidan Hagarty scored 10 points. Coach Bob Zalunardo praised Hagarty for playing a strong floor game.

Sophomore Deontay Walker, playing what coach Zalunardo described as “his best game of the year,”?scored 7 points with 7 rebounds and 2 steals.

Kera Vogel and Jennifer Marshall scored 7 points each for the Weed varsity girls, Kaitlyn Hartje 6, and Marlena Duchi 5.

With the non-league wins, the Cougar varsity boys improved to 12-3 overall, the JV boys 13-4 and the JV girls 14-2.

Weed is scheduled to return to Shasta Cascade League play Friday night at Etna.
