Born on January 6, 1922 to Leif and Ingeborg and raised on the family farm in Victor Township, Marshall County, South Dakota, Ruben Tinis Thornes passed peacefully from this earth on January 13, 2011.

Ruben lived in South Dakota until 1952, when he moved his wife and two little girls to sunny California.

He settled in San Carlos, where his two younger children were born, but after tiring of the “city life,” he moved his family to Dunsmuir, where he enjoyed the fresh air, clean water, and quiet lifestyle of northern California.

Ruben and his wife moved to the Sacramento area in 2005.

Married to Judith Christine Haaland for over 65 years, Ruben was the proud patriarch of the Thornes family.

Father to four – Ann (and Al) Smith, Joy (and Dave) Willis, Kevin (and Julie) Thornes, and Ingrid (and Dave) Karacozoff.

Grandfather to 12 – Alan Smith, Adam (and Teri) Smith, Matthew (and Heather) Willis, Brett (and Theresa) Willis, Timothy Willis, Joshua (and Erika) Thornes, Jordan (and Annie) Thornes, Sarah Thornes, Tessa (and James) Van Boxtel, Jill (and Chris) Voyvodich, David Karacozoff, and Ally Karacozoff.

Great-grandfather to 12 – Nate, Kyle and Courtney Smith, Jamie and Cameron Smith, Sailor Willis, Eleanor, Elizabeth and Emery Thornes, Noah Thornes, and Taylor and Sierra Voyvodich.

Ruben will be remembered with tremendous love and admiration for his quick wit, his big smile, his twinkling blue eyes, his mischievous chuckle, his love of card games, his amazing strength, his perseverance, his indomitable spirit, and his unwavering belief in “family first.”

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Dunsmuir Fire Department, 5902 Dunsmuir Avenue, Dunsmuir, CA 96025.
