Tough defense got the Weed Cougars an early 12-2 lead and they stayed in front throughout for a 45-38 victory over Mount Shasta in front of a standing room only crowd Friday night, Jan. 28, 2011 in Weed.


The Cougars (5-0, 14-3) took over sole possession of first place in the Shasta Cascade League, while Mount Shasta (4-1, 9-10) fell to second.


Jake West led Weed with 16 points and 14 rebounds, and Mykeil White had 15 points and 5 rebounds.


Brad Thomas scored 12 to lead the Bears and Tim Jaegel made 7 of his 8 free throws to score 11.


"We got after it," West said.


"It was a big win for us," said Cougar coach Mike Carpine. "I told the guys to enjoy it this weekend, but we've got a big week coming up."


Weed is scheduled to play three games at home, including Tuesday against Fall River (3-2, 10-6) and Friday against Modoc (2-3, 7-7).


The Cougars lost to Fall River, 51-47, in an early season tournament at Fall River, then beat the Bulldogs by two points, 58-56, in the league opener at Fall River.


Weed is also scheduled to play a rescheduled non-league game against Mercy Wednesday.


Mount Shasta is scheduled to play at Modoc Tuesday and at Burney (1-4, 5-10) Friday.


In the other games Friday night in Weed, Mount Shasta's varsity girls defeated the Cougars 47-15, while Weed won the JV girls game 52-37 and the JV boys game 54-38.
