People are wondering – Will the friendly cow that usually stands on a hillside just south of Yreka on Interstate 5 stand again?

The answer
Yreka artist Ralph Starrit, the cow’s creator, said the cow will soon be removed from the field for a short time to get stabilized, then will return within the next month or so.

“We’ll get her back to normal and, since this is calving season, she might be having a calf,” Starrit said.

The cow has been in the field since 1995 and has been down for a couple of weeks.

There’s also some interest in creating more animals and placing them along the highway between Dunsmuir and the Oregon border, he said.

Volunteers are welcome to help with the project and they’ll learn how to weld in the process, Starrit said. He added that people have been donating small amounts to help with the cost, and anyone interested in doing that can stop by his studio in Yreka, or call him at 842-1439.
