Eugene William Speakman, 72, of Redding, California passed into his eternal home in heaven April 7, 2011, in the presence of his loving wife Jeanette at home.

On October 6, 1938 in Perry, Oklahoma, Gene was born to Ellis William and Opal Louise (Moore) Speakman. They preceded him in death.

From his marriage in 1958 in Castle Rock to Kathleen Circo were born a daughter, Lisa Ann Pollard of Lake Oswego, Oregon and a son, Joel William Speakman, who preceded him in death December 29, 1990, both of whom were cherished by him. He and Kathleen later divorced.

In addition to his daughter, he is survived by three siblings, Carol (Paul) Gillen of Toledo, and Marvin Speakman and Emily (Clyde) Blakely, both of Sutherlin, Oregon; many nieces and nephews; and two granddaughters, Melissa and Jessica, both of Oregon.

Gene and Jeanette were married in Mount Shasta, California October 6, 1996. She survives him at home. Also surviving are Jeanette’s daughter Barbara (and Scott) Brigham and their children, Christopher and Elizabeth.

All loved him dearly.

Gene graduated from Castle Rock High School and served both in the Coast Guard and the Navy. He recently told his family it was 1969 in Vietnam that he came to know the Lord Jesus.

After his military service, Gene bought his own truck for long hauls, but finally decided he was to be a logger. He came to know the mountains and roads of northern California very well and loved his life and livelihood.

His many friends in McCloud and Burney, California knew how he loved fishing and swapping stories at The Horseman.
He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Lions Club in Burney. He dedicated all his spare time to those organizations.

A celebration of Gene’s life will be held at The Horseman in McCloud at a future date. His remains will be buried at sea.
