The answer
According to Mount Shasta Public Works Director Rod Ryan, the city’s marshy foundations are the cause of some leaks in city streets. “Sometimes we have an actual leak in the water lines, but often, they’re the result of underground springs that surface, especially during the warmer months,” said Bryan. “This particular one on Lake Street is caused by an intermittent spring that pops up and goes away. There’s just no permanent solution. We’re also tracking one at the bottom of Lake Street.

The city looks into every leak it comes across to determine the method of repair. “If we start digging into a spring, the leak could become a lot worse if we’re not careful,” said Bryan. “We’re keeping an eye on the leak on Lake Street, and we’re noticing that the surface is sinking slightly. So we may have to get in there soon to see what we can do.”

With the recent leaks on Lake Street, and even up on Hatchery Lane, which the county is dealing with, you could say there’s a small price to pay for living in such beautiful surroundings.
