The question
In May, Castle Crags State Park was included on a list of 70 California State Parks slated for closure. People are wondering – what’s going on at Castle Crags?

The answer
From the outside, it appears that nothing has changed. However, behind the scenes, effort is being made to find a non-profit organization or private concessionaire who’s interested in taking over the park’s operations, said Heidi Horvitz, the park’s superintendent. So far, they’re still looking.

What it means to you
If a non-profit or other private organization is not found, Castle Crags is tentatively scheduled to close on Sept. 11, Horvitz said, though she’s working to get the camping season extended by at least one month. “There are still a lot of unknowns,” Horvitz said. “It’s sad.”

When the park closes, they’ll shut the gates, Horvitz said. There will be no assistance, garbage services, or access to water or restrooms.

Though the situation is grim, steps are being taken in protest of the planned closure. The Mount Shasta City Council will consider a resolution opposing the closure during their regular meeting on Monday, July 25. Organizations like the Mt. Shasta Trail Association is working to stop the closure, as well. For more about their efforts, visit www.gomsta.org
