The Weed High School cheer team had “a very successful experience” at the National Cheerleading Association Cheer Camp at Southern Oregon University in Ashland last week, according to coach Sue Tavalero.

Twelve of the WHS squad’s 13 cheerleaders attended the camp, Tavalero said, and of those 12 only four are returnees from last year’s squad.

The girls came home with four camp awards, including the trophy for most improved at camp, the performance Top Team Award, which is based on skill, technique, and performance ability and the Spirit Award, which is an award voted on by the other teams at camp to the most spirited team at the camp for the week.

Individual awards went to Katy Pimentel, Osa Traylor, Courtney Fisher and Banessa Casola as nominees for the All American Team with Banessa Casorla winning a place on the team. She exemplified the best skills in three advanced jumps, a spirited entrance and a camp cheer. Casorla has qualified to attend NCA Special Events.

The team also came home with four ribbons from the week, two for excellence and two for superior performances.  They also earned a certificate of excellence for safety in spotting stunt techniques.

“Overall it was a very successful week for Weed Cougar Cheerleaders and they are looking forward to the 2011-2012 season of football and basketball,” Tavalero said.

WHS will be fielding a Junior Varsity and a Varsity cheerleading team, with Tavalero returning as coach assisted by Meranda Bowman.

“A big thanks goes to The Weed Store and Mark and Cindy Stenssas for providing the team with fun Weed t-shirts from their store each day at camp,” Tavalero said. “It was a hit and the NCA staff at camp is always excited to see what we wear each year.”
