The player shortage that had Weed High School's varsity football program struggling to stay afloat all season brought it to a premature close this week.

The final two weeks of the 2011 football season will be JV-only at Legion Field in Weed, beginning with tonight's kickoff at 6:30 p.m.

Head varsity coach Dave Toms said earlier in the week that he expected to have 13 players suited up to face Etna tonight, but the situation changed.

"Our numbers dropped too low to keep the program going," Toms said. "I'm disappointed we couldn't finish the season."
