A family hike to Mossbrae Falls turned tragic Saturday when a woman was struck by a Union Pacific freight train. The woman was walking on the tracks northward from Simpson Avenue in Dunsmuir with her husband and two children, according to Dunsmuir Fire Chief Dan Padilla.

He said that the accident occurred about noon. The woman survived the impact and was taken to Mercy Medical Center Mt. Shasta.

“They encountered a train,” Padilla described at the fire station after returning from rescue operations. “The other three were able to clear the tracks, but the one hiker was unable to and was struck by the train.”

Padilla said that the hiking party had passed a No Trespassing sign. “If you choose to go ahead and ignore that sign, you better be alert for trains,” he said. “There is also a possibility you may be cited by law enforcement.”
