When the snow finally started falling in mid-January 2012, Paj Kane of Mount Shasta said, "I am almost sorry to see the snow as I was really enjoying the ice skating on the alpine lakes!!!"

While more accessible Castle Lake was publicized as a popular ice skating destination this winter, Paj, her son Brennan, grandson Caden, and dog Boss sought out more remote destinations too.

The skating was good, she said, at Cliff Lakes, Little Castle, and Gumboot, while Kangaroo was "best of all."
