Harold “Jerry” Bates Jr., a resident of Mount Shasta, passed away on January 21, 2012 at his home. He was 84 years old.

Jerry was born in San Francisco, California on December 23, 1927. He moved to Siskiyou County from Marin County in 1963.

Jerry was a veteran of the US Navy. He worked as an environmentalist specialist for the State Health Department before his retirement.

Jerry was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and Equestrian Order of Holy Sepulchre Jerusalem. He enjoyed his family, fishing and gardening.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Kathryn Bates of Mount Shasta; sons, John Bates of San Rafael and Jerry Bates of Red Bluff; daughters, Kathryn Turner of Sacramento and Pamela Longacre of Hayward; sister, Patricia Rossoni of Concord; and eight grandchildren.

The Rosary will take place today, January 25 at 6 p.m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Mount Shasta.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, January 26 at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with Father Michael Canny officiating.

Burial is at Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery in San Rafael.
