Former Dunsmuir News reporter Tony D’Souza’s latest novel, Mule, has been optioned to be made into a movie.

Set partially in South County, Mule is a book about a young couple that turns to drug trafficking to scratch a living during the recession.

Earlier this month, it was announced that Green Hat Films’ Todd Phillips and Scott Budnick will produce the movie.  Green Hat is also currently working on several other films, including a third installment of The Hangover.

D’Souza, who worked as a local reporter for six months in 2008, said he used his time living in Dunsmuir as inspiration for the novel. He now makes his home in St. Louis, Missouri.

“I loved writing about Siskiyou,” D’Souza said. “I hope the folks up there can see my love for the place through a pretty crazy story!”

D’Souza is also the author of two other award-winning books, including Whiteman and The Konkans.

Mule is available online at Amazon.com or at Village Books in Mount Shasta, where it’s featured in the “What Locals are Reading” section.
