An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the identity and cause of death of a body found in a drainage ditch in Tulelake Tuesday afternoon.

A Sheriff’s Department Dive Recovery Team responded to assist with the recovery of the body, which was found near the Modoc County line at approximately noon on April 17, according to Allison Giannini, spokesperson for the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Department.

She would not speculate as to whether the body could be that of 20 year old Carlos Daniel Pena-Gonzalez, who had been missing from the Tulelake area since March.

Pena-Gonzalez was last seen alive on Friday, March 9, walking across a field adjacent to Scott Road in the Tulelake area, the Sheriff’s Department said in a press release last week.

He was reported missing on March 11, Giannini said.

Pena-Gonzalez is Hispanic, 5’10” tall and weighs about 150 pounds. He has short black hair, brown eyes, and has a scar above his left eye. He was last seen wearing a white t-shirt with the words “South Pole” on the front, blue jeans and a blue rosary.

Anyone with information about this case or who may know of Pena-Gonzalez’s whereabouts is urged to contact the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Department Detective Unit at (530) 841-2900.
