A Montague man was arrested yesterday under suspicion of assaulting his wife, who later died at a Redding hospital.

Lukes Ladewig, 30, is being held without bail at the Siskiyou County Jail, said Allison Giannini, spokesperson for the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Department. He has been charged with murder, assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm and a probation violation.

Deputies were called to the Kuck Road residence in Montague on a report of an unresponsive woman at about 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 17. They found the 30 year old victim in the bathroom of her residence with “visible injuries to her body,” said Giannini.

“Emergency medical responders on scene were able to establish a pulse, and the victim was transported to Fairchild Medical Center for treatment,” Giannini reported.

She was later transferred to Mercy Medical Center Redding.

“Despite a heroic effort by medical personnel to save her life during the day and nighttime hours, she was pronounced dead” on Thursday morning, Giannini said.

During the investigation, Sheriff’s personnel noticed “inconsistencies” in Ladewig’s account of events, Giannini said. Detectives from the major crimes unit were summoned and after subsequent interviews, they served a search warrant, gathered evidence and developed probable cause to believe the victim’s injuries resulted from a domestic violence incident at the home, said Giannini.

A forensic autopsy will take place in the next few days to determine the exact cause of death, said Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Detective Sergeant Mark Hilsenberg.

Anyone with information should call Detective Morlet at 842-8381 or Hilsenberg at 842-8767.
