Robert H. Tanner of Mount Shasta passed away peacefully at Madrone Hospice in Yreka on Monday, December 3, 2012. He was 89 years old.
Robert was born in Berkeley, California on February 21, 1923. At the age of 19, he secretly eloped with his 16 year old love, Lolare, in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. They were married for 58 years and had four children.
Robert moved his family to Mount Shasta in 1960.
He worked as an equipment operator for Caltrans for many years, and continued making material deliveries for his son’s construction business until he could no longer drive.
He loved to garden and raise animals and always had a beautiful yard. He liked to rebuild cars and trucks, tinker in the garage, and birdwatching. He could build or fix anything and even when he got older, he kept active and had high expectations for himself.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lolare, who passed away in 2000.
He is survived by a sister, Ruth Barcelon of Concord, California; two sons, David Tanner and his wife, Sharon of Yreka; and Jack Tanner and his wife, Trish of Mount Shasta; two daughters, Judy Thompson and her husband, Red of Las Vegas, Nevada; and Jane McKenzie and her husband, Bob of Mount Shasta. He had eight grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren who will remember him as a strong, moral and loving person who taught lots of good lessons, including to always eat the peels and never, ever, say you’re bored (unless you want to pull weeds, that is). He will be greatly missed.
No services will be held at his request.
In lieu of flowers, send contributions to the Mount Shasta Senior Nutrition Program, PO Box 314, Mount Shasta, CA 96067; or Madrone Hospice, 255 Collier Circle, Yreka, CA, 96097.
