The Shasta Cascade League champion and No. 1 seeded Bears are scheduled to play No. 5 Redding Christian Oct. 31 at Shastice Park. Weed lost its playoff opener at Paradise Adventist Academy in Chico Tuesday, 2-1.
The top two teams in the Shasta Cascade League and top two teams in the Feather River League remain after the first round of the 2013 Northern Section Fall Soccer playoffs.
For Thursday's semifinals, No. 5 seed Redding Christian will play at No. 1 Mount Shasta, while No. 2 Tulelake will host No. 3 Paradise Adventist. The two teams that win Thursday will play for the championship Saturday at the home of the higher seed.
The starting time for Thursday's game at Shastice Park in Mount Shasta has been changed from 3:00 to 3:30 p.m.
Bears head coach Bradly Robinson wrote in an email that the key for the Bears will be "DEFENSE," something they've been excellent at this fall.
Mount Shasta has outscored its opponents 69-4 in league and 75-4 overall, recording shutouts in all but four of their matches.
"Starting strong on the offensive end and keeping the constant pressure up at all times," Robinson continued. "Need to jump out to an early lead and just play relentless for 80 minutes."
In the opening round of the playoffs, Paradise Adventist defeated No. 6 Weed Tuesday in Chico, 2-1. Redding Christian defeated No. 4 Butte Valley, 2-1. Tulelake defeated No. 7 Etna, 5-1.
After a first-round bye, Shasta Cascade League champion Mount Shasta (15-0-1) will face the only team it lost to this year. That loss, in a tournament match, was later erased from the Bears' record because it wasn't a complete game, according to Robinson.
The Bears won their first match of the 2013 season at Redding Christian, 1-0.
Last year, a Redding Christian team that was seeded No. 7 defeated No. 2 Mount Shasta in the first round of the playoffs in a fifth overtime period in Mount Shasta.
This year, Robinson expressed optimism about the playoffs because the 2013 Bears are better at finishing off scoring opportunities than last year's team.
Redding Christian (16-5-1) and Paradise Adventist Academy (13-5-0) tied for first in the Feather River League.
Tulelake (13-2-3) finished second to Mount Shasta in the Shasta Cascade League, while Butte Valley (8-5-2) was third and Weed (9-8-3) fourth.
