Now that Weed's Run for Food has been established as an annual Thanksgiving morning event, the Weed Chamber has provided it a space on the city's year-round Community Events billboard.

This year's run, which raises funds for Siskiyou Food Assistance, will start at 9 a.m. sharp at College of the Siskiyous' track and football field. Already, 140 runners and walkers have registered, said event coordinator and Siskiyou Food Assistance director Denise Spayd. Several families registered are bringing three generations to participate.

"After working as hard as we have to build this event, it is an honor to be able to add Run for Food to the other special events happening in Weed," Spayd said.

Joined by sponsors that have backed the event since it began in 2011, the Run for Food committee celebrated the sign raising Monday afternoon. Having recently been awarded a portion of Weed's Transient Occupancy Tax funds for event promotion, the committee believes the added exposure will give the run more potential to grow.

Siskiyou Food Assistance supplies emergency food to those in need, Spayd explained.

"Last week we set an unfortunate record of 117 people needing help," she said, and having enough food to meet the need each week is a constant challenge.

"Government grants are helpful, but we needed a stable fund to draw on when those checks are delayed," she said. That's where the Run for Food comes in.

"We believe that engaging our own community... is very important. Run for Food income has become the stabilizing element we needed. We have been amazed at how passionate our participants are about spending their Thanksgiving morning to help others. The dedication of our sponsors and participants alike encourage us that we are not alone in our efforts," said Spayd.

Registrations for the Nov. 28 race can be taken at Sportsmen's Den in Mount Shasta on Wednesday, Nov. 27 from 1 to 5 p.m., and at COS from 7:45 to 8:45 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day.

Registration is $20 for adults and $15 for kids age 11 and under. T-shirts are a separate purchase for $15 each.

Medals will be awarded for the top three finishers in each age category, starting at 6-8 year olds and up to 70 and over.

Registration also includes refreshments and free raffle entries.
