  • The Weed Cougars won varsity and JV boys tournament championship games Saturday in Weaverville.
Senior Edgar Casorla missed part of Friday's second round game after hurting his knee, but returned Saturday to score 33 points in a 68-64 championship game win over Fall River.
Casorla was chosen as the Trinity Holiday Classic varsity MVP. Weed senior Trevor Shaffer and junior Jordan DeBortoli made the all-tourney team.
The Cougars had little trouble winning their first two games at the Classic, 72-46 over Tulelake Thursday evening and 62-27 over Fort Bragg Friday night.
Shaffer led Weed with 19 points against Tulelake, Casorla scored 16, DeBortoli had 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Aidan Hagarty had 11 points and 5 rebounds.
Shaffer scored 15 against Fort Bragg, Hagarty had 11 points and 4 rebounds, and DeBortoli had 8 points and 4 rebounds.
Casorla scored 9 points before leaving the game in the second quarter. Weed coach Mike Carpine said he got kicked in the knee and hit the floor hard. The ice treatments he was given obviously didn't cool his hot hand.
DeBortoli scored 10 points and had 10 rebounds in Saturday's championship game, Craig Fehlhafer had 10 points and 7 rebounds, Hagarty scored 9 and Shaffer 6.
Weed led Fall River by 13 points with 1:40 to play before the Bulldogs narrowed the margin.
Now 7-1 overall, Weed is scheduled to play its first home games of the season Tuesday against Tulelake.
The Trinity tournament championship was the second in two weeks for the Weed JV boys, who improved their overall record to 6-1.
