Hoopa won the boys championship at the 2013 Mount Shasta Holiday Tournament, and Camberwell of Australia was second. The host Bears went 2-1, losing for the first time this season to Camberwell Friday night.
Despite chants of "USA, USA..." from their student cheering section, Mount Shasta's boys basketball team lost for the first time this season to Camberwell of Australia Friday night at the Holiday Tournament.
The strong Aussie team matched the Bears' quickness, shot better, and "their huge guys in the post hurt us bad," Mount Shasta coach Cliff Blakely said after the game.
"We'll get better from it," Blakely concluded, and sure enough the Bears were back to their winning ways in Saturday evening's Holiday finale, a lopsided 57-39 win over Yreka.
Hoopa went 3-0 to win the Holiday boys championship, and their senior post player Milton Stewart (No. 42) was the tournament MVP. He scored 59 points in three games, including a 73-65 win over Camberwell Thursday.
Camberwell won its next two and placed second, based on its 63-50 victory over the Bears, who also went 2-1 over the weekend and finished the week 7-1.
The Bears opened with a 61-48 win over Willows. They led Yreka 12-10 after one quarter, outscored the Miners in the second quarter 20-8, and took it to the house from there.
Cesar Gonzalez made four of his five 3-point shots in the first half against Yreka and led all scorers with 27 points in the game.
