The man who died in an officer involved shooting on Interstate 5 between Mount Shasta and Dunsmuir Thursday morning has been identified as Ryan Daniel Vrenon, age 25, of Carson City, Nev.

The man who died in an officer involved shooting on Interstate 5 between Mount Shasta and Dunsmuir Thursday morning has been identified as Ryan Daniel Vrenon, age 25, of Carson City, Nev.

The Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office reported today that Vrenon was pronounced dead at the scene “following an exchange of gunfire with involved CHP responders.”

The CHP's Critical Incident Investigative Team is conducting a criminal investigation into the shooting, with assistance from the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office, according to the CHP.

An initial media advisory Thursday morning from the CHP's Northern Division in Redding stated that officers stopped to check on a motorist who was alone in a 2004 Chevy Malibu parked on the right shoulder of I-5 southbound, north of North Weed Blvd. at about 6:53 a.m. July 30, 2015.

The CHP reported that officers observed a firearm in the vehicle, and a pursuit ensued after the man drove away. Officers pursued and a spike-strip was used. The shooting started after the Malibu drove into the center divider and stopped just south of the Mott Road exit.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 4, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
