Pianist Svitlana Smaga, formerly of Siskiyou County, will be performing Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky’s piano suite, “Pictures at an Exhibition” on Saturday, March 18 beginning at 7 p.m. at Pops Performing Arts and Cultural Center, 5819 Sacramento Avenue in Dunsmuir.

The suite is Mussorgsky’s most famous composition, and it is a showpiece for virtuoso pianists, according to Wikipedia.

Smaga will play the 10 movements inspired by the 1874 exhibit of paintings by renowned artist Viktor Hartmann. The concert will be enhanced by a slide exhibition of various Hartmann paintings.

Originally from the Ukraine, Svitlana received her Master’s degree in Piano Performance from the Donetsk State Conservatory and the Mariupol Music College.

After relocating to the USA in 2005, she served as a piano instructor and staff accompanist at College of the Siskiyous and pianist for the American Eurhythmy School.

Currently a resident of Tacoma, Wash., Svitlana runs a private piano studio and is a collaborative pianist for the Tacoma Opera.

Svitlana is a guest pianist for the internationally acclaimed Rimsky-Korsakov String Quartet from St. Petersburg, Russia. The Rimsky-Korsakov String Quartet is scheduled to perform in Siskiyou County at the end of September.

“The reason I chose Mussorgsky’s suite is that it always fascinated me but I never had a reason to learn it. When Sally Johansson (president of MBTM) asked to work on a solo piano program, she asked what I would really love to play. The ‘Pictures’ were in the top of my bucket list,” said Smaga.

Music by the Mountain is hosting the event. There is a $15 suggested donation at the door.
