The Shasta-Trinity National Forest recently approved an order prohibiting camping and using a fire, campfire or fire stove within the Mount Shasta Plantation area of the Mount Shasta Ranger District except in developed recreation sites.

Order No. 14-17-02 is effective through March 31, 2018.

The Forest Service stated in a press release last month that the problem with trash and illegal campfires is an ongoing concern, especially in the plantation zone on the lower section of the Everitt Memorial Highway.

District Ranger Carolyn Napper said in an email that the Forest Service will be posting the area and placing copies of the Forest Order throughout town so people are aware of the change.

The Forest Service will also post “No Camping” signs.

A violation of the prohibition is punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 for an individual or $10,000 for an organization, or imprisonment for not more than six months, or both, according to the order.
