Those attending The Siskiyou Arts Council Gallery & Cultural Center’s opening of its latest art exhibit, “Portraits,”  March 5, voted Eloise Larson’s painting “Merry Christmas, Steve” as “Best of Show.”
The show attracted many new faces — both adorning the walls and perusing the gallery — said SAC executive director Lauri Sturdivant.
“Helping as a juror for Portraits seems to come naturally,” wrote juror Kim Solga in her statement.  “As a human being, I am intimate with faces — my own face in the mirror, faces of loved ones, faces in the community, in the news.”
Other jurors for the show were Peter Reinheimer and Mike Mallory.
Best of Show artist Larson said, “This painting, of my husband's mother, Betty, is an act of love and admiration. Having recently left her home of 30 years and moved to assisted living, her place in life shifted significantly.  Visiting her in November of 2009, staying in her house without her, I began to see that she and I shared many habits and traits, along with our love for her son.  Coming home there was nothing else to do but paint her.  This is the expression of the impact she has had on my life and the natural gratitude her presence instills.”
The Portraits show will be on display at the SAC Gallery and Cultural Center, which is located at 418 N. Mt. Shasta Blvd, until April 10. For more information contact SAC visit SiskiyouArtsCouncil.org, or call 926-1294. (SAC’s phone number was printed incorrectly in the print edition of the paper.)
