Despite this week’s spring-like weather, the Siskiyou Ice Rink is pushing forward, busily making ice in time for their grand opening this Saturday, Nov. 22. At noon, the season’s first public skate will begin.
“There are many fun and exciting events scheduled for this season,” said new rink manager Robin Taylor, as the Mount Shasta Parks and Recreation crew began preparing the rink.
“On Sunday, Nov. 23 we will be holding our annual Turkey Bowl at 1 p.m. It will be goofy fun for the entire family,” said Taylor. “We also will have Santa on ice, a New Year’s Eve skate, and plenty of other exciting events. A planned grand finale on Feb. 28 will be a ‘So You Think You Can Skate’ event, complete with local celebrity judges.”
Taylor said all the dates and times for the various events, as well as Siskiyou Ice Rink Programs, regular and holiday schedules, information about adult and youth hockey leagues, directions, fees and services, season passes, skating camps, lessons and other important information are on their website, www.siskicerink.blogspot.com, which will be continually updated.
Two qualified skating instructors are available for lessons this season: Blaire Barton, a senior level figure skater, performer and instructor who has been coaching for 8 years; and Dottie Martin, master rated skating coach who has been teaching lessons at the Siskiyou Ice Rink for two seasons.
In October, Dottie formed an adult competitive team which competed in San Francisco at the Adult Nationals. The team also included Gayin Linx and Marge Wheeler from Mount Shasta, AliCarmen Carico from Lake Shastina, Norma Casmey from Redding, and Dale Johnson from Oregon. The team brought home 21 first and second place medals.
