Mount Shasta, Calif. -

Mark Gibson will show his video “The Big Burn” this Thursday, July 2, at the Stage Door Coffee House in downtown Mount Shasta beginning at 7 p.m.
The Burning Man show will be followed by the local band Last Call, beginning at 9 p.m.
“Burning Man is the state of being highly energized and out of your mind while you are wildly singing, dancing, climbing, crawling, riding and laughing with some of the most liberated people on our planet,” Gibson says.
Designed as an interactive pyrotechnic artist freak fest, the multimedia festival takes place in the temporary community of Black Rock City on the Black Rock Desert northeast of Reno, a four-hour drive from northern California. Here during the week leading up to Labor Day in early September thousands of creative and adventurous people (49,000 in 2008) gather for a week of uninhibited self expression, fun and sharing. One-of-a-kind massive art works adorn the playa, and music emanates from all directions day and night.
A veteran “burner” Gibson will show his graphic video that captures the spirit of the gathering, from huge drumming circles, life in the “no trace” self-sufficient   camps and fire breathing serpents to ingenious art cars, painted bodies and astonishing shows and performances. He’ll discuss the “gift economy” that is the basis for free exchange of anything anybody brings to the burn, and he’ll show how Siskiyou area burners live the good life in Camp Siskiyou.
“When people bring all sorts of things to contribute to the gift economy, they are then entitled to receive all the things that others bring,” said Gibson. “You’d be astonished at what people bring to share with others... And there’re no weapons or violence – everybody just wants to play and have fun. It’s the happiest place in the world for adults, and it’s the perfect place for you to live out your fantasies that seem inappropriate for the default world”.
