Four people suffered major injuries in the snowy April 2, 2010 accident near Black Butte Summit on Interstate 5 that resulted in what the California Highway Patrol described as "a sea of vehicles askew over the entire roadway."
CHP estimates that between 30 and 40 vehicles were involved, including a Mount Shasta Fire Protection District fire truck that was rear-ended, a Mount Shasta Ambulance ambulance that got side-swiped and a Mount Shasta CHP patrol vehicle that got rear-ended.
No fatalities were reported. A total of eight people were transported to Mercy Medical Center Mt. Shasta, including two with multiple broken bones and two with head injuries.
Passenger vehicles from Weed, CA, Great Falls, MT, Independence, OR, Grants Pass, OR, Bend, OR, Pascao, WA, Tehchapi, CA, Pebble Beach, CA and Esiah, CA were among those involved, according to a CHP report.
A CAL FIRE press release says 10 ambulances responded to the incident along with 15 fire engines from Siskiyou County agencies including Mt. Shasta Fire Protection District, Mt. Shasta City, CAL FIRE, Dunsmuir Castella Fire, Hammond Ranch, Lake Shastina and Grenada Fire.
More than a dozen weather-related accidents were reported throughout Siskiyou County during the April 2 snowstorm. Similar conditions exist on Easter Sunday.
