Rachel Wiley’s family and friends went wild when they heard her name called as the winner of the grand prize raffle drawing at the end of Monday’s Mount Shasta Fourth of July Fun Walk & Run awards ceremony.
The 15 year old Yreka High School student’s reaction was much more subdued as she took the stage on Castle Street and stood at the podium with race director Jim Parker.
Too young yet to have a driver’s license, Rachel was being handed the keys to a 2011 Kia Soul. In jest, Parker asked the large crowd looking on if they thought she should get the prize despite her age. They roared their approval.
When Parker gave Rachel the microphone, she simply said, “Thanks guys,” with a smile and still unbelieving look on her face.
Rachel, the daughter of Zane and Valarie Wiley, was mobbed when she left the stage by a small and vocal band of her fellow Yreka High cross country teammates.
Continuing the celebration behind the stage, they checked out the all-white Kia and posed for photos. Cell phone calls were made to spread the word.
Rachel kept smiling, but appeared the calmest one of all. “It’s crazy,” she said. “I’m in shock.”
Soon Rachel took the passenger’s seat with her mom at the wheel and friends in the back. Off they went to join the procession for Mount Shasta’s Fourth of July parade.
