Andrew Thomas leaps “the coffin” during the “Dawn of the Shred” Cyclocross race held in Mt. Shasta’s Shastice Park. Thomas, who hails from Klamath Falls, was one of the many who traveled to Siskiyou County to be part of the day’s festivities.

Mark Shriever will soon be returning to his home in Fort Collins, Colo., with the grand prize from the first “Dawn of the Shred” event – a cow skull with a bike crank embedded in it.
Shriever won both the A division and the “overall participation” award for the men’s category in the new Mt. Shasta event that brought pre-Halloween bicycle fun this past weekend in the form of a Cyclocross race, a bike parade and a “Zombie Ball” that featured plenty of two-wheel antics.
A seasonal CAL FIRE firefighter stationed in Hornbrook, Shriever previously raced cyclocross professionally and still competes regularly.
“This was an excellent event... a true cyclocross course with a lot of variety,” he said.
Event organizer David Marchi explained that, “The winners will keep their prize for a year, but they have to return it and add something for next year, making it better.”
Marchi said during Sunday’s awards ceremony that the idea behind the event “was to get community participation and have some fun.”
Cyclocross is a form of racing that consists of laps on a 1.5 to 2 mile course that typically includes pavement, wooded trails, grass, steep hills and variety of obstacles, often requiring riders to quickly dismount and carry their bicycles at times.
Though some of the riders were clearly pushing hard through the course that laced its way through Shastice Park, most were there to have some fun and enjoy what was a stellar Fall day.  Many wore Halloween costumes.
Mount Shasta resident Tom Tharp, who has ridden in many other cyclocross races, was a participant and one of many volunteers who helped with the race.
“The course was great,” said Tharp, who competed in the B division. “It was fun, technically challenging but not too dangerous... There can be horrendous crashes (in this sport), but I didn’t see any today.”
Andrew Thomas of Klamath Falls described the course as “fun, fast, with a lot of sketchy corners.”
Thomas, who took first place in the B division,  rides regularly on the Southern Oregon cyclocross circuit, and though he describes himself as primarily a road biker, he said he is quickly becoming hooked on this increasingly popular sport.
For Zach Pfeiffer, who won the overall participation award in the junior division,  his favorite part of the race was “going fast.”
“Not only was Zach riding hard in today’s race, but he participated in every other part of the weekend too, including laying down some awesome skids in the skid contest,” said Marchi.
Dylan Krause, Miles Colescott and Travis Tuttle were the top three finishers in the under-10 category.
“I liked going over the gravel,” said Dylan with a big smile on his face.
Miles Colescott said he thought the course was really fun. He admitted that he had been practicing  on  a course in his backyard to get ready for the race. “This course is bigger though,” he said.
Though technically in the junior division, Tanner Lujan gave Dennis Campbell a run for his money in the C division race, securing an overall first in the 10-and-over division.
Race official Ed Garfield, who made the trip from Medford, summed it up nicely: “(Cyclocross) is more of a family or community event (than a race).”
Marchi plans on continuing the event next year and on into the future.
He extended  his thanks to all of the volunteers who helped, noting in particular a generous donation by Christina Ordway that paid for the event’s insurance. He also extended his thanks to the Mt. Shasta Parks and Recreation District.
