Construction on the new 14,000 square foot Weed Community Center has begun and Weed Recreation and Parks District board member/Weed City Councilor Sue Tavalero said she has one word for it with three exclamation marks, “Yahoo!!!”

At a ground breaking ceremony Thursday, June 15, at the site adjacent to Charlie Byrd park, members of CAL FIRE, Weed Fire Department, Timberworks Construction, Shasta Regional Community Center, and Weed Long Term Recovery Group joined Recreation and Parks District board members in showing support for the new center.

Recreation and Parks district director Mike Rodriguez said they are excited to begin the project and are looking forward to having the community center for many uses and events for all ages.

Construction is being done by Timberworks Construction. Timberworks contractors and Mount Shasta residents Buzz Knight and Dave Mauro said they are glad to be a part of it.

Mauro said the community suffered a real loss when the Boles Fire swept through Weed in September 2014.

Knight said the center is going to be an awesome addition to the community.

Mauro said they are local contractors and almost all their subcontractors are local. “It’s great,” he said, “because our guys get to work in town.”

Recreation and Parks District board member Martin Nicholas, Weed’s Chief of Police, said the process has been long, but it will be enjoyable and he is looking forward to it.

The building will include a main event hall, recreation room, exercise gym, recreation/exercise pool and spa, dance studio, commercial kitchen, classrooms, conference rooms, physical therapy rooms, 140 parking spaces and a view of Mt. Shasta.

Mauro said they are on schedule to have the building completed in a year.
