The Mt. Shasta Farmers’ Market is hosting a raffle to initiate fundraising for the Culinary Action For Education project, known as CAFE.
Prizes include a $100 gift certificate from Native Grounds Nursery and t-shirts, hats, market bags, and aprons from the Farmers’ Market. The drawing will be held during the Aug. 28 market in downtown Mount Shasta.
CAFE began with a suggestion made by 14-year-old Maya Rawitch who wants to help build a full-use kitchen facility for the Mount Shasta public schools. Currently school meals are prepared in Weed and transported to Mount Shasta.
The new kitchen would enable the schools to more fully utilize fresh produce and products raised by local growers, according to a Farmer’s Market press release.
The CAFE fundraising goal of $250,000 has been set to cover the cost of facility construction. Mount Shasta Unified School District trustees endorsed the collection of funds for the kitchen during their June 13 meeting. Raffle tickets are available in Mount Shasta at the Farmers’ Market and Native Grounds Nursery and Garden Center.
The Mt. Shasta Farmers’ Market is open from 3:30 to 6 p.m. every Monday on N. Mt. Shasta Blvd.
The market is a project of Jefferson Economic Development Institute, whose mission is to increase the economic well-being of people and communities through business development and local wealth creation.
