John Kennedy Jr. of Mount Shasta was one of 80 coaches and parent volunteers from the Junior Giants baseball program honored during a home plate ceremony Sunday, Aug. 20, at AT&T Park in San Francisco.

The annual Coach and Team Parent Recognition Night was hosted by the San Francisco Giants Community Fund prior to the Giants’ evening game against the Phillies.

Kennedy, a Junior Giants coach, was one of those honored with the Junior Giants Willie Mac award, named in honor of Giants Hall of Famer Willie McCovey, who attended the ceremony.

The Junior Giants Willie Mac Award is the “junior” version of the annual award presented to a Major League Giants player as voted by his teammates and coaching staff. The award is presented to Junior Giants coaches and parents who best exemplify a positive influence and dedication to their teams, to help players grow and build strong characters, according to a press release from the Giants Community Fund.

Kennedy’s eight year old son Benjamin received one of this year’s Willie Mac awards for Junior Giants players earlier in the month at AT&T Park. Both John and Benjamin are invited to participate in a Willie Mac Award Luncheon later in the fall.
