Friday, Oct. 13, was not a good day for a McCloud resident on the 200 block of Shasta Street. Gusty afternoon winds caused a pine tree to break in half and fall on a detached garage smashing it flat and knocking it off the foundation.

The tall tree was on McCloud Elementary School property. It was what loggers refer to as a widow-maker with a trunk that had separated into two tops.

Jeane Graves Mitchell, who reported the incident, said she heard it from inside her house one block away. “I first heard a loud crack and then the aluminum crashing down when it hit the roof and smashed it flat.”

The owner of the garage is a part-time McCloud resident who came to town after being evacuated from the Sonoma area fire.
