Friends of the Rink has worked hard to accomplish rink improvements each year, in support of Mount Shasta Recreation and Parks District, to keep this community gem shining bright, an Ice Rink press release states.
The past two seasons have seen the rink’s expansion to being a full National Hockey League standard sized rink, new dasher boards were acquired and installed, the entire chiller system was upgraded, issues with the rink’s cement pad were addressed, the area around the fire pit was improved, new hockey netting was put up, and much more, including helping make youth hockey accessible to all youth wanting to participate.
This year, noteworthy enhancements have taken place pre-season to help improve the operation of the rink, the release states.
With additional funding help from an anonymous donor, a white epoxy coating has been put down on the north end and around the perimeter of the rink to help alleviate ice melt problems in those areas. New safety netting has been installed by the Zamboni doors to help prevent injuries from errant hockey pucks, and a 2006 Zamboni has been purchased that the rink anticipates will be easier to maintain than their current “classic” Zamboni.
Friends of the Rink also directly funded upgrades to the rink’s sound system and dasher boards.
The rink offers skate sessions for the public, plus special group skate times, ice skating and hockey lessons, and special events that include skating with Santa, the much-loved New Year’s Day Pajama Skate and other holiday skate times, a Full Moon Skate, and an annual pick-up hockey tournament.
Season passes can be purchased on weekdays at the Mount Shasta Recreation and Parks District office at Mount Shasta City Park, at the rink during open hours, and online via PayPal at the rink’s website listed above.
