The Weed Community Christmas Basket program continued 36 years of tradition on Dec. 15 at the Weed Presbyterian Church, where food for holiday meals was boxed for those in need.

Seventeen volunteers including committee vice-president Evelyn Smith and committee president and Weed Police Chief Martin Nicholas helped to put 159 meals together and distribute them free of charge.

Smith said donations come from various churches, organizations, and businesses in the area including the Pilot Station, McDonald’s, Great Northern Services, and the Family & Community Resource Center of Weed.

“I want to thank all the businesses and organizations for helping to make this a beautiful event – thank you for sending checks and donating food,” said Smith. “Thank you, thank you, thank you from the Weed Community Christmas Basket program.

Meals included turkey, potatoes, vegetables, fruits, bread, cookies, and more.

Volunteers assisting in boxing and distributing meals were Avery Tunnicliff, Bailee Tunnicliff, Richard Guerra, Enrique Sanchez, Anna Volf, Ty Tafoya, David Riley, Sylvia Smith, Seth Curtis, Dodi Dickson, Troy Henderson, Mary Mazzoni, Willis Pugh, Roxann Anzo, Jaysean Henderson, Evelyn Smith, and Police Chief Martin Nicholas.
