Weed Parks and Recreation administrator Mike Rodriguez announced Monday that a matching challenge grant has been offered by the McConnell Foundation to raise funds to make the Weed Community Center “even better.”
“We’re asking the residents to show their support,” Rodriguez said. “We’re sending a letter to all Weed residents with the utility bills, and plan to make presentations to the service groups, seniors and schools.”
The McConnell Foundation has offered $100,000 in matching funds. Every dollar donated by the community for the building will be matched equally, so if the community gives $100,000, the center will have $200,000 to help finish the project.
The facility will have a card lock gym, a saltwater pool and jacuzzi, a grand room (seating capacity 160), rec center room (50 or less), a commercial kitchen, physical therapy rooms, exercise rooms, spaces for gatherings, and community outreach labs and classes.
The recreation classes could include line dancing, zumba, and yoga. The pool will have specialized senior classes and potentially swim lessons for people of all ages.
Rodriguez said the center, located at 161 E. Lincoln Ave. in Weed, will be available for wedding receptions, mini-conferences and meetings. The center will have a facility manager on site to receive calls and to make reservations, he said.
The Shasta Regional Community Foundation is collecting the donations for the center and will be collecting them until May 2.
Major facility donations have been received from the Ford Family Foundation, the Weed Long-Term Recovery Group, the McConnell Foundation, and United Way.
“The District thanks the recent generosity of our recent funders,” Rodriguez said.
Some of the other major community supporters who are already involved include: Tony Aquila, Margaret Dean, Michael Kobseff, Kelly McKinnis, Mark Mazzoni, Martin Nicholas, Ken Palfini, Mike Rodriguez, Evelyn Smith, and Sue Tavalero.
“We’re definitely looking forward to making this facility a reality for residents and many visitors,” Rodriguez said.
