The Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office reported that a male juvenile suspect was arrested Thursday afternoon in Dunsmuir and booked on charges of attempted murder, home invasion robbery, burglary, grand theft, auto theft, false imprisonment, kidnapping, elder abuse, and attempted rape.
The investigation that led to the arrest, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release, began after Siskiyou County Dispatch received a call at about 7:26 a.m. on March 15 from a Dunsmuir resident. She reported that an unidentified suspect broke into her home on Butterfly Avenue and stole several items of value.
The Sheriff’s Office reported the following:
“After deputies arrived at the scene, it was determined the suspect reportedly stole items from the home and absconded with the victim’s automobile, prior to fleeing the area. It was also learned the male suspect allegedly attempted to sexually assault the victim. The suspect also strangled the elderly victim. The break-in and assault allegedly began earlier in the morning and the female suspect was obviously traumatized by the incident.
“Additional SCSO deputies responded to the scene and the SCSO’s Major Crimes Unit, including detectives and forensic technician responded and began assisting deputies with the follow-up investigation. The victim was immediately transported to a local hospital for treatment and to initiate standard investigative protocols.
“A description of the stolen vehicle and suspect was obtained and broadcast to all regional law enforcement agencies. It was later learned that the suspect in the home invasion robbery withdrew cash from a local bank using the victim’s bankcard. At about 3:14 p.m., SCSO Deputy Mike Burns spotted a vehicle matching the description of the stolen vehicle in the 5400 block of Shasta Avenue in Dunsmuir. SCSO deputies took one male juvenile and one female juvenile observed occupying the vehicle into custody. Evidence was recovered, including stolen property linking the male juvenile suspect with the home invasion robbery. The juvenile suspect was transported to and booked at the Siskiyou County Charlie Byrd Youth Correctional Facility. He faces attempted murder, home invasion robbery, burglary, grand theft, auto theft, false imprisonment, kidnapping, elder abuse, and attempted rape charges in the case. The suspect claimed he consumed marijuana and a concentrated form of the drug, ‘wax’ (butane hash oil) prior to the incident.
“According to Sheriff Jon Lopey, ‘The law enforcement team effort involved in the comprehensive investigation, relentless search, identification, and ultimate arrest of the key suspect in this case was extraordinary, and we are very relieved the perpetrator of these heinous crimes committed against an elderly citizen of our local Dunsmuir community has been apprehended and incarcerated. We are also grateful that the victim in the case received the care and treatment she needed in the aftermath of such a horrendous ordeal. The suspect’s case will be referred to the Siskiyou County Probation Department and the Siskiyou County Juvenile Court. This case is still under investigation and anyone with any information about the incident is urged to contact the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office 24-hour Dispatch Center at (530) 841-2900.’”
