The Klamathon Fire in far northern California had spread to 5,000 acres last night when Governor Brown declared a state of emergency in Siskiyou County and Caltrans District 2 advised the traveling public that Interstate 5 near the California-Oregon border would remain closed throughout the night.
Caltrans recommended that people traveling from the south limit travel if possible until the road is clear or drive through Weed and SR97 without stopping. Caltrans urged travelers “to drive slowly and fully aware of the potential excess in the number of vehicles transiting via SR 97.”
Caltrans District 2 said it would provide another update in the morning, depending on conditions.
The Klamathon Fire started Thursday afternoon south of Hornbrook, and residents in the area were evacuated, with a shelter set up at at Jackson Street School in Yreka and a large animal shelter set up at the Siskiyou Golden Fairgrounds.
