The local election cycle starts Monday, as nomination period opens up for Ridgecrest City Council and several special district boards.
For the City of Ridgecrest, two council positions (four-year terms) and the mayor (two-year term) are open. Nomination period starts July 16 and closes Aug. 9 at 5 p.m. If incumbents do not file by Aug. 9, the filing period will be extended to Aug. 15 for non-incumbent candidates.
Prospective candidates must be registered voters living in the city limits to be eligible.

Board seats are also open for the Sierra Sands Unified School District Board of Education, Inyokern Community Services District, Indian Wells Valley Water District, Indian Wells Valley Airport District, and and Rand Communities Water District.

• Three full-term seats and one short-term seat are open for Rand Communities Water District.
Eligible candidates must be registered in the boundaries of the respective districts.
Candidate paperwork will be available at the Kern County Elections Office, 1115 Truxtun Avenue, Bakersfield beginning July 16 and must be filed in person no later than 5 p.m. on Aug. 10.
According to the Elections Office, “Current law requires all candidates to file a Statement of Economic Interest (Form 700) with the county elections office where they file their declaration of candidacy. These forms are due no later than the final filing date for the declaration of candidacy. The form can be found on the FPPC website (www.fppc.ca.gov), or is available at the Elections Office. Paperwork will be available at the Kern County Administration Building in Ridgecrest (400 N. China Lake Blvd.) starting July 26.
Each candidate for nonpartisan elective office may prepare a Candidate’s Statement. Such statements may include the name, age, and occupation of the candidate and a brief description of no more than 200 words of the candidate’s education and qualifications expressed by the candidate. Each statement shall be included in the sample ballot, which is mailed to each voter.
