Cats in hats prowled area schools this past week, encouraging students to read in the morning and read at night.
Students, teachers, administrators and others were seen wearing the Cat in the Hat’s familiar red and white stripped stovepipe hats in celebration of Dr. Seuss’s birthday and the joys of reading.
At Castle Rock Preschool on Tuesday, March 2, green eggs and ham were served for breakfast, students were entertained by guest readers and a school book swap was held.
In Mount Shasta Elementary’s multi-purpose room Friday afternoon, the Cat in the Hat entertained students while Amy Tambou read “Mr. Brown can Moo! Can You?” by Dr. Seuss.
Recognized as the school’s Reader of the Year, Tambou said she chose the book, in part, because it rhymes with her last name.
Students responded with glee to the Cat in the Hat’s antics, which continued even when she was demonstrating how students could sit quietly. Silly cat.
“We have read 2,895 books,” announced principal Sally Gasaway just before showing a slide show featuring music and many pictures of students reading.
Students “echo read” a Reader’s Oath, promising to read every day, at home and away, alone and in crowds, indoors and out and every other whichaway, as a method of “feeding my brain what it needs every day.”
